As Texas braces for another hot summer, Reliant is ramping up support to help residents stay cool, safe and financially prepared. With rising temperatures expected to drive record energy demand and strain household budgets, the company is supporting 52 Beat the Heat centers statewide while scaling smart energy programs that reward customers for more efficient electricity use during peak periods.
“Staying comfortable in extreme heat should be simple and affordable for every Texan,” said Bill Clayton, senior vice president of Reliant. “Our goal is to provide practical, everyday support—from safe, air-conditioned spaces and meaningful customer assistance to innovative home technology—that makes it easier to stay cool, manage energy use and keep costs under control this summer.”
Across Texas, summer energy needs look different from one household to the next. For some, it means finding a place to cool off during extreme heat. For others, it’s using smart tools to better manage energy use and costs at home. Reliant’s summer programs are designed to meet both, with solutions that are straightforward, accessible and built for the way customers live.
Relief When It Matters Most
Reliant’s community-based programs provide direct, on-the-ground support for Texans facing extreme heat and rising energy costs:
-
52 Beat the Heat centers now open statewide
In partnership with local governments and nonprofits, Reliant is donating more than $200,000 to provide cooling centers across Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Corpus Christi, Lubbock and McAllen, offering critical relief during extreme heat. -
In-home cooling support for vulnerable households
Reliant funding will provide nearly 2,000 portable AC units and fans to eligible residents, extending cooling access to those without reliable air conditioning. -
$1 million in payment assistance
Through the CARE (Community Assistance by Reliant Energy) program, Reliant and parent company NRG have committed $1 million to support eligible customers this year. Texans facing hardship can call 2-1-1 or visit 211texas.org to connect with local agencies or reach out to Reliant directly for assistance.
Turning Smart Energy into Real Savings
Reliant helps customers take control of their energy use with technology-driven smart energy programs that deliver automatic savings. These programs help support Texas’ energy future as part of a virtual power plant (VPP), which increases grid stability and reduces energy costs for consumers:
-
Smarter homes, lower bills with Vivint
Reliant and home security leader Vivint work together to bring energy savings, protection and control—all in one place. Homeowners can add the Reliant Smarter Home Bundle to their electricity plan and receive a free Vivint Doorbell Camera Pro, Vivint Smart Thermostat and complimentary professional installation—a $500 value—plus personalized energy insights. This makes it easier for customers to monitor usage, improve efficiency and reduce costs. -
Small adjustments, real savings
The Reliant Degrees of Difference with Smart Thermostats program makes small, temporary thermostat adjustments during peak demand—often when homes are unoccupied. Customers who enroll remain fully in control of their thermostat and can earn an annual $40 bill credit for their participation.
