Kryonite Power initiates discussions with Los Angeles and San Diego to explore a new approach to California’s growing waste and energy challenges

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 10, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — California sends approximately 40 million tons of material to landfills every year equivalent to more than 110,000 tons every day.

Once placed in the ground, however, the problem does not simply disappear. Landfills can generate methane and contaminated leachate, creating long-term environmental liabilities and potential risks to groundwater, air quality and surrounding ecosystems. These liabilities can require decades of monitoring, management and remediation.

At the same time, California is facing rapidly increasing demand for reliable electricity driven by data centers, artificial intelligence, electrification and industrial development. The California Energy Commission estimates that data-center electricity demand could increase from approximately 1,000 megawatts today to 4,500 megawatts by 2040.

Kryonite Power believes California should stop looking at these as two separate problems.

The company is developing technology designed to process waste and convert it into useful energy, with the potential to reduce the environmental burden associated with conventional disposal while producing reliable power.

Kryonite Power has initiated contact with the City of Los Angeles and the City of San Diego to explore potential applications of its technology in California.

The environmental consequences of conventional landfill disposal are not theoretical. The ongoing situation at Chiquita Canyon Landfill in Los Angeles County has demonstrated how landfill waste can become a major environmental and community liability, involving landfill gas, odors, elevated temperatures and significant quantities of leachate requiring extensive intervention by regulators.
