Allegheny Financial Group Announces 50th Anniversary Milestone

Allegheny Financial Group (AFG), one of the region’s longest-standing independent wealth management firms, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Founded in Pittsburgh in 1976 on the belief that financial advice should be built around the client rather than a product, AFG has grown to more than 100 financial services professionals and over $6 billion in client assets* while remaining independently owned through five decades of industry change.

“Fifty years in this business is not something many independent firms get to celebrate, and it took a lot of hard work and dedication to get here,” said Joyce Huffman, President of Allegheny Financial Group. “My focus now is on the next fifty: continuing to earn the trust of our clients, investing in the people who have shaped AFG’s success, and strengthening the communities we’ve been part of for five decades. We’ll continue to grow and evolve, but what matters most won’t change – the relationships we build and the care we bring to helping our clients make decisions that shape their lives.”

AFG has long been an early adopter of client-focused, comprehensive financial planning. The firm was among the founding members of the Pittsburgh chapter of the Institute of Certified Financial Planners, a predecessor to today’s Financial Planning Association, helping establish the association’s local presence when fee-based financial planning was still a relatively new concept nationally.

As consolidation accelerated across the industry, AFG has remained independently owned. At the end of 2024, the firm exited the broker-dealer business, reinforcing its commitment to providing advice that remains true to its roots: fully independent and centered on the client.

The anniversary also reflects AFG’s longstanding investment in the Pittsburgh community. The firm has presented its annual Good Neighbor Awards for more than a decade, partnered with The Pittsburgh Foundation since 2004, and funded the placement of three service dogs for local veterans through Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs and the Veterans Leadership Program. AFG and its partners have also supported organizations including Ronald McDonald House Charities of Pittsburgh and Morgantown, HEARTH, Bethlehem Haven, Bridge of Hope, Merakey AVS, and programs benefiting individuals with disabilities through Purple Cat and GABBA Camp.

“Looking back over the last five decades, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the clients who trusted us from the beginning,” said Steve Hurst, Senior Partner at Allegheny Financial Group. “We’ve never been afraid to move ahead of where the industry was, from helping establish financial planning’s professional presence in Pittsburgh in the seventies to continuing to evolve our independent, client-centered advisory model. As we look toward our next fifty years, that commitment to our clients and our community will remain at the center of what we do.”
